In the name of early preparation, some players are taught to cock the racket back over the shoulder, point up at the ball, and then move back into position while maintaining that pose. (Which doesn't do diddly to keep the swing from being late.) If you use this technique, you're about to discover that you're not as slow and clumsy as you think.

Try this experiment: Look up while moving backward, raising your arms. Do you feel muscles freeze? Especially in the back of your neck? That's your backward-balancing reflexes kicking in. Your brain is at battle stations because its sensors show that you are off-balance backward and tipping over. So it's issuing involuntary orders to countermand and oppose your voluntary movements.

The same thing happens when we loose our balance sideways. If we fall to the right, our left leg and arm kick out to throw body weight in the opposite direction and shift our center of gravity back over our base of support. Our backwards-balancing reflexes are much more complex.

Why? Because we are top heavy and built for moving forward, so when we fall backward, catching our balance takes some gymnastics. A backward fall is very dangerous for us. So, our reflexes are highly evolved to bring us back on balance the instant they sense us off-balance backward. While you are leaning and moving backward, your reflexes are on red alert. They don't want you to raise your free arm, to tip your head back and look up, or to cock your racket back over your shoulder: all those movements lift and shift body weight more backward, making you more top-heavy and off balance. Your reflexes want you to do the opposite: they want you to get low and "pike," thrusting arms and legs forward to bring body weight forward and present your butt instead of your head to the ground.

So, when you try to move back under the ball with your free arm pointing up to the sky, your head tipped back, and your racket cocked back over your shoulder, you're battling your reflexes. That's why muscles freeze: they are getting conflicting orders from different parts of the brain. You are literally fighting with yourself when this happens. That's why it feels so awkward.

Now try the following technique instead: When moving back into position for an overhead, keep your racket close to your body and down by your leg until you need it (as in the picture at left). Keep your other arm down, too; don't point till you raise your racket. Then, as you raise your racket, keep it in close to your torso: don't wave it around at arm's length behind you (as in the picture below). There. How does that feel?

This seemingly magical technique minimizes what you do to raise and shift your center of gravity beyond your base of support. Say what? Okay: This technique minimizes what you do to set off those balancing reflexes. They're cranial reflexes (i.e., wired directly to the brain), so when they're firing, they not only fight your every move, they also take priority and commandeer brain-power needed for sensory perception and coordination. They make it impossible to concentrate. As a result, you misjudge the ball, feel inhibited, and move both slowly and awkwardly. You'll find you're much smoother, faster, freer, and more coordinated when you're not fighting yourself. Your timing, memory, and ball judgment improve, too.

I know that if you try this you won't need convincing, because it will feel so right you'll know it's right. But I might add that if you watch what real players with good overheads do, you'll never see one moving back under the ball with his free arm already pointing upward and his racket already cocked behind his back.
